하나 Natural and Basic

Lesson2 Call people by their name or title. Avoid to use pronouns

Korean commonly call someone by their name이름 with "~씨", "~님". Or just omit them from the sentence.

  • I Love her.
리아 is her name.
  • Ex) What are you doing?
      • ~하세요 is more 존대honorific than 해요. It respect the subject of the verb. You will learn about 존대 in next lesson.
    • Natural "뭐 해요?" "뭐 하세요?"

You can also call them with their title호칭, or role역할. You will use titles most of the time in korea. But There are many different titles in korean. As you will see, It's still complex a lot. So i just pass them now. I will show them at the last bonus.

But if you don't know her or his name, role, title, You can use ~분. It is very honorific.

  • 이분 this one (honorific)
  • 저분 that one (honorific)
  • 그분 the one (honorific)
  • Who is she?
    • Awkward
    • Rude
    • Natural and Polite Who is that one?
  • Ah, she is my mother.
    • Awkward
    • Rude
    • Natural and Polite

Why don't we just use ponouns like english? You 너,당신 She 그녀, 그 여자 He 그. 그 남자 They그들

It's because Koreans hate to use pronouns. It can be absurd or even rude.

  • If you are a beginner.
  • So you don't want to know the korean culture and exception where you can use pronouns.

You can just pass these. Here is the summary

  1. You can use she그녀 or he그, they그들. But it may be absurd.
  2. I recommend not to use you 너, 당신. It can be rude at least in tandem.
  3. You can use them in writing. But usually not in talk...

Test and Practice

  • A man wanna say "민준 is 서연's boyfriend." then...
    • you can use their name and -씨.
    • of ~ = ~의
  • then... the man wanna say "But He doesn't loves her."
    • but = 하지만
    • not do = ~하지 않아요.
    • You can omit the subject.
  • In fact, the man is talking to 서연. His name is "지훈"
    • 지훈 wanna say "But I love you!"
    • If he omit the subject, it would be ambiguos. So...
    • he say "하지만 저는 서연씨를 사랑해요!"
  • But, she will say "Sorry for you... I still love him"
    • sorry 미안해요.
    • still 여전히, 아직
